Thinking it’s time to start a second (or third) language for your baby, toddler or preschooler? Consider using Little Pim: fun with languages, the award-winning immersion-method language introduction video series. I have witnessed myself the effectiveness of this program with my 2-year-old son.

The Little Pim program offers Spanish, French, Chinese, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, English (ESL), Arabic, German and Russian. They offer DVDs as well as digital downloading options. Most languages include 3 themed DVDs with Spanish, Chinese and French now being offered on additional disks 4, 5 and 6.

As a special offer for our readers, you can enter to win two free DVDs from Little Pim by entering our contest. If you are a Facebook fan at the time you are chosen, you’ll win a plush Little Pim panda too! The winner will be chosen in one week and notified through email.

Little Pim was created by Julia Pimsleur Levine, an award-winning filmmaker, mom and the daughter of Dr. Paul Pimsleur, an internationally known language teaching pioneer, in 2006, as a way to introduce French to her young son. In this short time, Little Pim’s videos have won 10 awards, including iParenting, Mom’s Best, Creative Child and Mr. Dad.

From the Little Pim website, here are the benefits for babies and toddlers/preschoolers for learning an additional language early:

Foreign language for babies:

  • Familiarizes babies with the rhythm of other languages.
  • Stimulates the part of the brain that processes language, with proven benefits for development of language.
  • Provides fun way for babies and parents to bond, as they watch and listen for new words together.

Foreign language for toddlers and preschoolers:

  • They begin to pick up the vocabulary and use it in everyday speech.
  • Toddlers realize every English word has an equivalent in another language, which fosters greater cognitive abilities.
  • They develop a better accent and think foreign language learning is fun!

The videos utilize real kids and parents engaging in the activities that fit the vocabulary such as eating, drinking, playing and wake up time. By using short segments and lots of review, the words quickly catch on for the child. After watching the video just twice, my son quickly picked up “una vez más” from the Spanish video we watched, which means “one more time,” and he’s never spoken Spanish before.  After every series of vocabulary and demonstrative videos, an animated Little Pim the Panda segues into a quick review of the words “una vez más,” which helps galvanize the words for the viewer.

I eventually put the video on repeat because my toddler wanted to watch the 35-minute video over and over. Soon, he was repeating the words, even though he didn’t actually sit and watch the entire time. He was listening while he played in the room.

Parents can turn on the subtitles if the language is not familiar to you. They do display the words they are saying on screen for the benefit of the viewers who can read. Each video introduces approximately 60 words and phrases.
